Not All HDPE Pipes Are Created Equal
Did you know that the Canadian National Building Code and the Canadian Electrical Code both call out CSA HDPE for electrical applications? The CSA C22.2 327-18 standard became part of the code in 2018 and is applicable to HDPE electrical installations and is the only recognized HDPE Standard for electrical applications.
Directional drilling companies are already using HDPE over PVC sticks for its ease-of-installation. There are many electrical applications where HDPE can be used compared to traditional PVC stick applications based on construction and installation conditions such as:
> Road Crossings
> Sensitive Envrionmental Locations
> Congested Urban and Expansive Rural locations with Long Runs
> Roads, Curbs, and Sidewalks
> Utility Electrical Cabling
> River and Lake Crossings
> Airport Runways and Aprons
> Traffic and Signal Lighting
> Railway and Urban Transit Networks
> Parking lot and Street Lighting
> Green Energy (Solar/Windmill)
Why use CSA Listed HDPE Over PVC Sticks?
It is an option in addition to PVC duct/conduit for electrical applications that require CSA by code but utilize the installation advantages that HDPE has to offer. One product that competes in this space is Duraline's PowerGuard, some of the PowerGuard advantages are:
> Listed to CSA C22.2 #327-18 HDPE Conduit, Conductors-In-Conduit & Fittings 2018 In use in applications up to 69Kv
> Sizes ½” to 4” Continuous lengths – means no joints, no glue
> Standard configuration (Red, 4 Blk Stripes, Longitudinal Ribbing and Silicore-ULF)
> Installed by HDD, Plow or Open Trench in various soil conditions
> Low Coefficient of Friction less than .05, No additional Wet Lubrication required
> Superior Impact strength, especially in cold temperature applications, Pre-installed Pull Tape 500# to 6000#
> Can be connectorized to existing traditional or new PVC conduit systems with couplers, or PVC Sweeps and Epoxy
The Canadian Inspection Community, Municipalities, Hydros, Transportation Authorities, and Engineering Firms are adopting this CSA Standard into their specifications and inspection practices.
